PodDock · guide / 14 October 2026

An old iPod.
Your whole collection.

Rockbox opens up folders, playlists, formats and themes. PodDock then helps manage that collection on a Mac. This guide focuses on the iPod Video 5 / 5.5; always follow the current installation manual for your exact generation.

Identify the player first

Check the model marking, generation and physical design. Capacity alone is unreliable after a storage upgrade. Video and later classic models use different Rockbox targets.

FamilyCompatibility
iPod 1–4, Photo / Color, mini 1–2Use the exact model manual. The earliest models need FireWire.
Video 5 / 5.5ipodvideo; A1136 is the family tested with PodDock.
Classic 6 / 120 GB / late 2009Separate Classic procedure and ipod6g.
nano 1–2Separate supported targets.
nano 3Development port: check the current NAND limitations.
nano 4–7, shuffle, touchNot supported by this Rockbox guide. Included illustrations are a catalogue, not a compatibility promise.

Back up before changing the system

Charge the player, use a reliable data cable, and copy music, playlists and personal files to another drive. For an existing Rockbox installation, PodDock can back up configuration and theme resources. This is not a full music or partition backup.

Restoring, converting the filesystem or replacing storage can erase data. Do not use Disk Utility’s Erase button as an installation shortcut. Keep a backup first.

Verify the required partition layout and FAT32 filesystem. A Mac-formatted iPod needs the appropriate conversion procedure from its model manual.

Install using the official route

  1. Download Rockbox Utility and select the exact device and mount point.
  2. Read the Video installation manual or the separate Classic manual. Never mix bootloaders across generations.
  3. Follow the recommended installation and release choice. The bootloader starts the system; the .rockbox folder contains system resources. Copying that folder alone is not a bootloader installation.
  4. Wait for writes to finish, eject safely, start the player and verify Rockbox and the documented original-firmware startup route before adding a large collection.

If Utility cannot perform a step on your Mac, use the documented supported route instead of random terminal commands.

PodDock does not install bootloaders, format disks or modify firmware. It manages an already-mounted Rockbox disk.

Transfer one album first

  1. Connect a working Rockbox iPod as a disk containing .rockbox.
  2. In Music / On your Mac, add an album folder and verify its artist, title and track count.
  3. Open the album, add it to the queue and transfer. Audio bytes are copied without conversion. Identical files are skipped; different files with the same name are retained.
  4. Eject and open Files → Music in Rockbox. Update Database on the player if you use it.

MP3 and FLAC have separate filters. Hi-Res describes source parameters, not the output capabilities of an old DAC. Multi-disc albums remain grouped. Cover Flow is an extra Mac view, not a firmware interface change.

Find and repair artwork

Use Clean up / Find missing artwork online, or search from an album. MusicBrainz and Cover Art Archive provide release-group fronts. Automatic addition requires a unique matching artist and album; otherwise edit the query and choose a preview. Editions may differ.

PodDock prepares baseline JPEG 500 × 500. A dedicated album folder gets one cover.jpeg; folders with multiple albums may need track-specific files. Replaced images and removed metadata are backed up on the Mac. Audio tags remain unchanged; embedded art may take precedence.

Extra entries named ._track.flac are macOS AppleDouble metadata. Use the macOS-file cleanup action. PodDock copies only audio data and cleans up metadata after transfer; Finder copies can introduce it again.

Hardware upgrades are a separate project

For flash adapters or batteries, verify generation, case thickness, connectors and manufacturer requirements. Capacity alone does not identify compatibility. Record your modifications in Your iPod; PodDock cannot automatically identify the adapter or battery. Do not open a working player just to install Rockbox. Stop if a battery is swollen or damaged, or a ribbon connector is broken.

Troubleshooting

The disk is missing

Check the data cable, power and direct connection. For Video / click-wheel disk mode, reset with Menu + centre, then hold centre + Play/Pause. Other generations have their own instructions.

PodDock does not find Rockbox

Select the root of the correct volume, not its music folder. Refresh. Finder hides dot-folders; that does not mean .rockbox is absent.

Artwork or Database is missing

Check the real folder in Files, edit the search query, update Database on the player and consider embedded-art priority.

The system will not start

Follow your model manual’s recovery and uninstall section. Do not erase partitions or delete a bootloader blindly. Record model, release, filesystem and the exact failure before seeking help.
